The Ficus Elastica (rubber plant) is a very popular houseplant, which creates a vintage-inspired look whatever its size. Although robust, take a look at our care tips below to ensure that it thrives.

Water

Allow for about an inch of the top soil to dry out between watering, letting the water drain through – allow for half of the soil to dry out if kept in low light conditions. Avoid overwatering during the winter months as too much water will cause the leaves to yellow and drop.

Light

This plant prefers bright indirect to moderate light conditions, but can tolerate low light conditions provided it is not too dark - if there is not enough light it will stop putting out new growth and gradually drop its leaves. Direct sunlight will cause the leaves to scorch.

Temperature

These plants, although sturdy, prefer a consistent environment with high to medium humidity and are best suited in temperatures of 15-24°c, avoiding any sudden temperature drops or cold drafts. Placing a humidifier in the room will help increase the humidity if needed.

Feed

Use a high nitrogen liquid fertiliser once a month during the spring and summer months to encourage new growth – too much feed will cause the leaves to burn.

A little extra…

Wipe the leaf surface occasionally to remove any build-up of dust. Repotting is usually every 2-3 years with any pruning done during the spring or summer months to retain its shape. Worth noting – this plant produces a sap that is toxic and irritant if it comes into contact with your skin.
